One of the requested but most problematic apps is WhatsApp. They do not have open API, and so there is no way how we could build floating app for it. We’ve even contacted them to ask if there is any possibility to cooperate to bring floating WhatsApp, but we haven’t received permission to do so.

However, there is a way how to float WhatsApp – using the freeform mode. It’s not perfect, it’s not like our built-in floating apps and it doesn’t work on all devices (as the freeform mode is only supported on Android 7 and newer, and the support differs across different vendors), but it’s good enough to use it while waiting for your army to be prepared for the next battle in Clash of Clans.

If you run Android 6 or older or if your device doesn’t support the freeform mode, there is no way how to float WhatsApp. I’m sorry, but it’s not a problem of our app but rather a problem with WhatsApp being very closed and not allowing others to build 3rd party apps. Of course, I understand that it’s a kind of protection of their users. However, it’s also limiting them from having such a great app floating WhatsApp would be.

I’m running Nexus 5X with stock Android 8.1, and I will show you how to play Clash of Clans and chat on WhatsApp at the same time.

1. If you haven’t activated the freeform mode, do it now. Go to Floating Apps and select Float normal apps from the main menu and follow the instructions.

2. Tap the floating icon to access Applications and swipe tabs to Launcher.

3. Be sure that Clash of Clans is not running. Swipe it out from Recent apps to kill it. Then, long tap the Clash of Clans and from the context menu select Start in medium window.

4. Now, Clash of Clan is running in a window. It’s a bit tricky as you need to find the best window size to have it run correctly and I suggest to use the landscape orientation instead of portrait.

5. Now, repeat the same process for WhatsApp, and you will end up with something like this (and you can even have a date tonight like me but it’s nothing Floating Apps can help you with:-)):

6. Btw, you can easily combine it with built-in floating apps.

Please note that on some devices, it’s not possible to start games in a windowed mode. It’s a limitation of the given Android version.

Not perfect but still impressive, don’t you think?
